People often ask what it's like to be a student-athlete and why I chose this path.
I always tell them the same thing.
For me, it's about the people and the opportunity to learn from my teammates, coaches, and athletic department leadership at Friends University.
It's about leading my team and making an impact both on and off the field.
I had the honor of being a captain on the women's soccer team, which allowed me to build relationships with my coaches and understand their roles on a deeper level.
This position also gave me the opportunity to lead my team and make a difference in that way, which was something I always strived to do.
And that's something that I hope every student-athlete can experience.
The Importance of Influence
One of the most important lessons I've learned is that each of us has an individual sphere of influence, and it's crucial to use it wisely.
Being part of a team at Friends University and even just being human, gives us the chance to influence others and bring our unique gifts, perspectives, and value to the greater whole.
For current student-athletes, I want them to know that they bring something special to the table.
It's important to remember that there is something greater than just personal success.
We have the ability to make a positive impact on our teammates, coaches, and the community.
I'm grateful for the experiences and opportunities I had during my time as a student-athlete, and I hope to continue making a difference in the future.
Injuries & Adversity
During my time at Friends University, I faced two serious injuries that tested my resilience and determination.
But I was fortunate to have the support of the athletic trainers, Robin and Kyler, as well as
Serena Lytle.
Their care and friendship were pivotal in my recovery process, and I'm incredibly thankful for their dedication.
Serena, in particular, played a significant role as the women's soccer trainer, and I owe her a lot for helping me continue playing soccer for as long as I did.
Overcoming these injuries taught me the importance of perseverance and the power of having a strong support system.
I couldn't have made it through those tough times without the support of my teammates, friends, and family.
They uplifted me during the challenging moments and celebrated with me during the triumphs.
Their unwavering support made a significant impact on my journey, and I'm grateful to have such incredible people by my side.
A Career Well Spent
Looking back on my time as a student-athlete, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences and opportunities I had.
Being a part of the women's soccer team and the Friends University community shaped me into the person I am today.
The lessons I learned, the friendships I made, and the impact I was able to have are things I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Now, as I've transitioned into the next chapter of my life and career, I continue to carry the values and lessons I learned as a student-athlete.
I'm currently an Account Manager at Serviam, a telecom vendor management firm, and I'm putting my MBA education to good use.
I've found a lovely community here in Kansas City, and I enjoy serving at my local church and participating in various charities around town.
I may not be competing on the soccer field anymore, but I'm still playing for fun and staying active in different sports.
The lessons I learned as a student-athlete continue to guide me in my personal and professional life.
Forever Grateful
In the end, being a student-athlete is about more than just the sport.
It's about the relationships, the growth, and the impact we can have on others.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of the women's soccer team and the Friends University community.
