WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Women's Tennis Falcons opened the spring campaign with a 5-2 victory over the John Brown University Golden Eagles yesterday (Mar. 9) at the Riverside Tennis Center in Wichita. The Men's Falcons were on the short end of a 6-1 decision to John Brown.
The Falcon Women were fueled by KCAC Preseason Team selection Silva Avakian, who competed in both #1 singles and doubles and was victorious in both. Avakian defeated Lin Tan (5-7, 6-1, 10-8) in singles and teamed up with Mirella Calvacanti to win 6-3 in doubles.
Additional single wins by Calvacanti, Nikolett Krivek, Jazzmyn Williams and Hanna Wood clinched the win for the Falcons.
For the Falcon Men, a huge bright spot was the play of freshman Aidan Marshall, as the Melbourne, Australia native won 6-3, 6-3 in his single outing and also won 6-4 with Enric Galan in the doubles match.
Both Falcon squads will next compete in the Lone Star State, starting with matches at Our Lady of the Lake University on Wednesday (Mar. 13) at 1 pm in San Antonio, Texas.
