Tennis Falcons Claim Two Wins Over Tabor as the Men’s and Women’s Teams Earn KCAC Tournament Berths

HILLSBORO, Kan. - The Friends University Women's Tennis Falcons dominated Tabor College with a 7-0 sweep, while Men's Tennis secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the Bluejays yesterday (Apr. 18). The wins clinched both teams' spots in the KCAC Tennis Championship Tournament.

Women's Tennis swept all six singles matches and secured the doubles point with victories in all three flights. Silva Avakian and Aneth Diaz triumphed at No. 1 doubles, defeating Adah Branam and Amy Holloway 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Carlotta Klee and Tammy-Ann Lombarth overpowered Ashley Jimenez and Jacilyn Seachris with a 6-0 result. The match at No. 3 doubles was won by default by Friends, sealing a clean sweep in doubles.

In singles play, Friends continued its dominant performance. Leading the way, 16th-ranked Avakian delivered a flawless performance at No. 1 singles, defeating Holloway 6-0, 6-0. Diaz followed suit at No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Seachris. Klee added to the tally at No. 3 singles, overcoming Branam 6-1, 6-0, clinching the dual match for Friends.

Further singles victories came from Alana Ewert at No. 4 singles, who defeated Jimenez 6-1, 6-2. The matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles were won by default, completing a comprehensive 7-0 victory for Friends over Tabor.

Men's Tennis secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions and clinched the match with singles victories at the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 spots.

Gabriel Gomes and Cristobal Fuentes dominated at No. 1 doubles, defeating Joao Sa and Rayane Sanhaji 6-1. Rodrigo Torres and Trey Lacy followed suit at No. 2 doubles, overcoming Bruno Cardoso and Peter Jost with a 6-1 score. Tabor College's Joao Franchi and Isaac Yourdon took the win at No. 3 doubles, besting Yves Ikuno and Jacob Bush 6-4.

In singles, Friends extended its lead with quick victories at the top of the lineup. Fuentes claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sanhaji at No. 1 singles, while Gomes secured a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Cardoso at No. 2 singles. Torres clinched the match for the Falcons with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 win over Sa at No. 3 singles, bringing the score to 4-0.

Despite the overall decision being sealed, Tabor fought back in the remaining singles matches. Jost edged Lacy in three sets at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. At No. 5 singles, Franchi overcame Ikuno with a hard-fought 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(5) result. Yourdon added another point for Tabor by defeating Seth Ogden 7-5, 4-6, 7-4 at No. 6 singles, leaving the final score at 4-3 in favor of Friends.

These victories secured Friends University Tennis a spots in the KCAC Tournament, marking the first time that both the men's and women's teams have qualified.

Women's Tennis will open competition in the KCAC Championship Tournament on Wednesday (Apr. 22) as the No. 7 seed, facing No. 2 seed Bethel College in the quarterfinals at 9:00 a.m. at Smoky Valley High School. The men will begin play on Thursday (Apr. 23) as the No. 7 seed, taking on No. 2 seed University of Saint Mary at 9:00 a.m. at the same location.
