Mesquite, Texas – Riley Wertz powered the Friends University Falcons to a 6-4 victory over the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in the second game today (Feb. 10) at the SCS/NAIA Invitational in Mesquite, Texas. Earlier in the day, the Falcons won 3-0 over Southwestern Assemblies of God University.
Wertz struck out 10 batters in a near-flawless six-inning outing. She allowed just one hit and walked three.
A Wichita native and transfer from Hutchinson CC, Wertz also helped herself at the plate with a three-run double in the fourth to put the Falcons on top.
Wertz then scored on an RBI single from fellow newcomer Raeleen Hernandez for a 4-0 lead.
After Makenna Mitchell then singled home Fallyn Marshall to make it 5-0, the Evangels got a two-run triple by Brooklyn Wilson as part of a four-run sixth inning that made it a one-run game.
But the Falcons tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the frame and Wertz re-entered in the seventh to close the door on the victory.
The Falcon offense was also ignited by Marshall, who was a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate with two runs scored from the leadoff spot.
The two wins today make the Falcons 3-1 on the young season. Yesterday, Friends lost 12-4 to Missouri Baptist University before rebounding to win 9-1 over Southwestern Christian University.
