‘Being part of an institution that values both academic achievement and athletics is incredibly rewarding’: Friends alum Preston Todd recalls life-changing decision to stay at Friends

I'll never forget the day I turned down the University of Houston College of Optometry. It's not every day you walk away from a clear path into the medical field, but that significant decision changed my professional career.

Instead of pursuing a future in optometry, I chose to stay at my alma mater, Friends University. What seemed like a surprising choice at the time led me down a career path I had never imagined, and one that has brought me more fulfillment than I could have dreamed of.

Looking back, it's clear there was a greater plan in motion. This is how it all unfolded.

Deciding to Stay at Friends

After graduating from Friends, I chose to stay and work here, though it wasn't part of my original plan. There was something about the university that felt different—a deep sense of community and purpose. The faculty and staff had made a profound impact on me, not just academically, but personally. It was a place where people truly cared about each other's success, and I knew I wanted to be part of that.

I was drawn to the small, close-knit nature of Friends, with its strong Christian foundation and commitment to welcoming students from all backgrounds. That inclusive spirit, the dedication to helping students grow academically and personally, was something I felt passionate about supporting.

Now, 18 years later, I've held a variety of roles at Friends University and can honestly say I love what I do. Being part of an institution that values both academic achievement and athletics is incredibly rewarding. I think about the day I turned down optometry school often, and I'm confident it was the best decision for me.

Athletics at Friends

One of the things I admire most about Friends is the emphasis on developing student-athletes holistically, both on and off the field. I know from personal experience how impactful that can be—I was a member of the tennis team during my time here, and it helped shape me in so many ways.

Competing in tennis challenged me athletically, but the friendships I built with my teammates were just as important. We traveled to regional meets, supported each other through tough matches, and shared experiences that went far beyond the court.

As an employee, I've had the privilege of working closely with our athletic department, particularly in developing academic support for student-athletes. It's something I'm deeply passionate about because I believe in the power of education and the importance of giving athletes the tools they need to succeed in the classroom as well as in their sport.

Friends University runs an outstanding athletic program, and I'm proud to be part of it.

Just Getting Started

When I think about my journey at Friends, one phrase stands out: "We're just getting started."

There's so much potential ahead of us, whether it's in developing our athletic programs or continuing to support students in all aspects of their lives. I believe Friends is only beginning to realize what it can achieve, and I'm excited to see what the future holds.

I'm proud to be both a graduate and an employee of this university, and I'm eager to be part of the incredible work that lies ahead. That decision to stay at Friends all those years ago? It's one I would make again.
