WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Athletic Department is sad to announce that women's golf head coach Paul Howe has passed away.
"We are devastated about the loss of Paul," said Dr. Rob Ramseyer, Friends University VP of Athletics & Strategic Expansion. "He was a man of God who cared deeply about people...especially his family and his team. I deeply respected him and will miss him dearly."
Howe was in his ninth season as head coach of the Women's Golf Falcons and helped the team to a third-place finish at this season's KCAC Match Play event.
Last season Howe guided the Falcons to a top three result at the KCAC tournament, their best showing in program history.
"Coach Howe has had an impact on so many," said Dustin Galyon, Friends University Director of Golf and men's golf head coach.
"From those that worked and coached with him, to his players that he loved dearly. I am fortunate to be one of those that he impacted in a profound way. I am a better coach because of Coach Howe, but more importantly, I am a better husband, dad and leader because of the time he spent with me. Coach Howe made time for me and others and I believe he modeled what we are created to be and live as followers of Christ. Coaching was a ministry to share the Good News for Coach Howe. This has been a tough and difficult time but I have peace knowing my friend is in Heaven!"
Prior to arriving at Friends, Howe coached the Mulvane High School women's golf program for 18 years. He had also taught in public schools as an instrumental music teacher. He was a Friends graduate and was heavily involved in the Friends University Fine Arts activities.
In a testament to Howe's leadership with the program, the Falcons were awarded the KCAC Women's Golf Team of Character last season.
Howe is survived by his wife Linda and two daughters, Melissa and Jacque.
Funeral services will be on Friday (Nov. 8) at 10 am at Downing and Lahey, East Chapel in Wichita.
