When Brad Peterson learned that his 2011-12 cross country and track & field teams would be inducted into the Friends University Athletic Hall of Fame, a wave of pride washed over him. "I could not be prouder of the teams from 2011-2012 being inducted into the Friends University Hall of Fame," Peterson said. "That was a truly special year in sweeping the KCAC championships across both cross country and track and it is a tribute to everyone for their hard work and belief in the plan."
Those squads didn't just win—they changed the course of a program. The Falcons snapped decades-long conference championship streaks and established a new standard at Friends. Years later, the memories remain vivid for Peterson because the accomplishment continues to grow in magnitude. "It is hard to believe that we accomplished all of that and in such a short time," he said. "It was only my third full year at Friends University that this happened and we were blessed with amazing recruits that turned the program around quickly. It was just the perfect storm and I am amazed when I look back on it now by those teams."
Seeing Something Special
For Peterson, the signs of something historic began to appear before the season even started. "In cross country, we definitely saw it coming in the year prior as we began to close the gap on Southwestern," he said. "Then as the year progressed, we quickly saw this was a special team that could do those things."
Track & field, however, is harder to project because of the strategic nature of conference meets. "With track, it is much tougher to predict because the conference track meet is one in which there is so much strategy involved in placing different individuals in different events so the regular season does not really provide much of an indicator," Peterson said. "So for that, it was more as the meet went on and the momentum just kept building in our favor, that was when I knew. We were dominant in the throws, the jumps, and in the distance events where we won every single event."
The Most Memorable Moments
Ask Peterson to pick the moments that stand out most from that year, and his mind goes straight to the championships that defined the season. "For both the XC and track teams, the mission was always simple…to break the incredible streak of conference titles that Southwestern had a hold of for about 30 years in each," he said. "So the most memorable moments were certainly winning the XC conference meet and then the track conference meet. We also had some wonderful national meet performances that stood out."
Those championships were more than trophies—they were the culmination of years of work, belief, and unity.
What Made Those Teams Different
Peterson is quick to point out that talent alone didn't define those teams. It was the selflessness and unity that set them apart. "The key factor was definitely the team coming together as one for one common goal and being unselfish," he said. "Every single person was willing to do whatever was best for the team. This was especially evident in track with so many guys doing multiple events to help the team win. In cross country, we became a family as the season went on and they ran for each other."
He also credits an ensemble of coaches and support staff who elevated the program. "We had some amazing coaching help as Billy Beard was second to none as throws coach and Cole Davis came in right in the middle of track season to help the sprints and jumps out tremendously," Peterson said. "One of the most invaluable pieces to this puzzle is a guy going into the hall of fame this year, our athletic trainer,
Robin Johnson, who also happens to be one of my dearest friends of almost 20 years. Robin was the glue to our success behind the scenes, he was always keeping our kids healthy and ready and was the BEST at injury prevention but he was also so invested in our teams. He was an extension of the coaching staff and my right hand man. Lance Goodwin was a great assistant coach in cross country as well! And Matt Kennedy deserves some credit as well as he and I came to Friends at the same time with a very similar vision and the women also broke those Southwestern streaks impressively so it was a domino effect."
A Legacy That Lasts
For Peterson, the Hall of Fame induction is not just a celebration of wins—it's a recognition of a group that changed what was possible at Friends University. "It was just the perfect storm and I am amazed when I look back on it now by those teams," he said.
Years later, the pride remains as strong as ever—and so does the bond between a coach and the teams that made history together.
