Women’s Wrestling crowns champion at Grand View Open; Men’s Wrestling battled at Missouri Valley Open

Des Moines, Iowa - After a forgettable KCAC dual tournament, women's wrestling took on a new adventure at the Grand View Open. Friends had three placers and one champion being Isabel Reyes.

 

Isabel Reyes competed in the silver division in the 138 lb weight class. Reyes won her first match in a close 9-8 victory over Olivia Brown. The next three matches for Reyes were all dominant. Grabbing falls the rest of her way through the bracket. In her championship match she would grab her fall just before the period ended at 2:58.

 

The next placer for the women Falcons was Gianna Redcorn. Redcorn was in the silver division at 207 lbs. Redcorn went 4-1 in her bracket with a forfeit win in the consolation championship. Redcorn collected the bronze medal match after her 10-3 victory over Jaedyn McNeil of Wayland Baptist University. 

 

Karla Martinez placed 4th for Friends in the silver division at 180 lbs. Martinez went 3-2 earning two falls out of those matches. Martinez ultimately fell in her 3rd place match, but had a great showing for the women's program.

Next for women's wrestling is a dual meet against St. Mary. The dual will be in Leavenworth on Friday (Feb. 13).


Men's wrestling went to Missouri for the Missouri Valley Open. The men didn't have any placers in the open, but had two strong performers with Timothy Merchant and Sam Duling

 

Timothy Merchant wrestled at the 197 lb weight class and went 2-2 on the day. Both of Merchant's wins came via tech fall before losing in the blood rounds in sudden victory.

 

Sam Duling battled in the 165 lb weight class and went 2-2 as well. Duling grabbed two tech falls on the winners side of the bracket before falling in the quarterfinal bout. After a tough 4-2 loss Duling ended his day going .500.

Next up for men's wrestling will also be a dual against St. Mary. This dual will be for the KCAC conference championship. Shortly after the women's dual they will battle for the title on Friday (Feb. 13)
