Winfield, Kan. – Tamara Lozoya and Cambell Riordan were a two-person wrecking crew for the Friends University Falcons in a dominating sweep of the Southwestern College Lady Builders today (Apr. 15) in Winfield, Kan. The Falcons are now 24-18 overall and remain in fifth place in the KCAC with a 14-8 conference record.
The Falcons won both games via the run rule, 17-1 in five innings in the first game and then dispatching the Lady Builders 10-2 in six innings in the nightcap.
Lozoya (six) and Riordan (four) combined to drive in 10 runs in the opening game victory, with the six RBIs representing a career-high for Lozoya.
The first inning saw Lozoya drive in Riordan with a sacrifice fly and the Falcons took off from there, scoring four runs in each of the next four innings.
Riordan had a two-run double in the second and RBI singles in both the third and fourth innings.
Lozoya hit three sacrifice flies before clearing the bases with a three-run double to finish off the Falcon scoring in the fifth.
Riordan was a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate in the first game for the Falcons, with Madison Nightengale delivering three hits and scoring three runs. Izzy Jones and Raeleen Hernandez also scored three runs and had two hits, while Lozoya, Ezra Arrendondo and Cadence Magana produced two hits for Friends.
Jenna Ormiston kept up her steady performance in the circle, striking out two with one run allowed to earn her 12th victory of the season.
Fayth Howard had two hits for Southwestern in the opening game.
The Lady Builders took an early 2-0 first inning lead in the second outing, but the Falcons had a quick response in the second frame. Riordan drove home a run with a single and then Arredondo followed that with a two-run single before Jones drew a bases loaded walk to make it 5-2.
Riordan and Nightengale then teamed up to break the game open as Nightengale stole home and Riordan stole second in the third.
In the fifth inning, Riordan then singled in Nightengale for a 7-2 lead. That was followed by Lozoya tripling home both Riordan and Magana. A sacrifice fly by Peyton Ganger brought home Hernandez in the sixth to provide the Falcons with the run rule victory margin.
The Falcons got contributions throughout the lineup in the second game, with Riordan, Arrendondo, Lozoya, Hernandez and Nightengale each recording two hits. Nightengale was also a force on the base paths with four stolen bases.
Arredondo started for the Falcons and got her ninth win with one earned run allowed and three strikeouts across five innings. Ainsley McGill then struck out one in a scoreless sixth inning to finish the victory.
Taylor Mesna had two hits for the Lady Builders (8-28, 2-20 KCAC) in the nightcap.
The Falcons will next be at York University on Friday (Apr. 17) starting at noon in York, Neb.
