Wichita, Kan. – Friends University baseball hosted Science and Arts on Tuesday, (Feb. 10) at Westside Field in a marathon extra-innings battle. The Falcons (4–3) fell 20–13 in 12 innings after an extended back-and-forth contest.
The Drovers jumped out early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run homer. The Falcons answered in the bottom of the first, by a 2-RBI double from Bernie Socarras and a sacrifice fly by Tanner Roberts, giving Friends an early 3–2 lead.
Both teams traded crooked-arm innings through the early frames. USAO tied the game in the 2nd and added a run in the fourth, but Friends continued to chip away with timely hits. Including a 2-run home run by Miles Hartman and an RBI groundout by Holden Sabor to keep the contest close throughout. This would be Hartman's 3rd home run of the season, a scorching hot start for the Falcons lead off hitter.
The Falcons rallied again in the eighth inning, with Colton Flores delivering a two-RBI single, Drew Lykes tagging an RBI sacrifice fly, and Elijah Joseph adding a two-RBI single to give Friends a 13–9 lead.
However, USAO refused to go quietly. The Drovers scratched back in the ninth with a clutch two-run homer to knot the contest at 13 all, forcing extra innings. In the 12th, USAO erupted for seven unanswered runs, using a combination of hits, walks, and aggressive baserunning to pull away for the 20–13 win. The Drovers would total 11 unanswered runs after being down 13-9 in the 9th inning.
The Falcons look to move on from this game as KCAC conference play will begin this weekend. The Falcons will head to Ottawa for a 3-game series against the Braves. On Friday (Feb. 13) there will be a solo 9 inning game at 1:00 PM. Saturday (Feb. 14) will feature a doubleheader at noon and 3:00 PM.
