Wichita, Kan. - The Falcons lined up their first conference game on a stormy night that had delays before and during the game. The Falcons ended up losing this game 2-1 to the Moundbuilders. The Moundbuilders are another tough matchup especially starting conference play for the Falcons.
This game had a delayed head start for an hour due to lightning. Early in the 10th minute Felipe Calderaro of the Falcons, had an early shot to put Friends ahead early, but hit the crossbar like many of the Falcons chances tonight.
Just 9 minutes later Southwestern's Marcos Benavidez scored one of his two goals of the night. The tap in goal was assisted by Carlos Villalba. Other than midfield battles and throw-ins, this was the only scoring in the 1st half.
Early in the 2nd half there was a lightning delay that was an hour long, Falcons faithful still showed out. The offense turned it up a notch after the delay, having 8 shots attempted in this half. Three of the 14 shots that Falcons attempted hit the crossbar in tonight's game. Many opportunities that were not cashed in tonight which was the biggest factor for the Falcons.
Southwestern scored their second goal via penalty kick putting the Moundbuilders up 2-0 in the 79th minute. The Falcons didn't get shutout due to Nathaniel Stephens scoring off a free kick assist by Fernando Suarez Picatoste. This was too little too late for the Falcons in this game.
The Falcons (0-6) KCAC (0-1) look forward to turning this season in the right direction on Saturday, Sept. 20 against rival Kansas Wesleyan University. Game will be at 7:00 PM CT.
