WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons swept past the Doane University Tigers in two vastly different games, winning the opening tilt 12-0 and then slipping by 3-2 in the second outing today (Feb. 23) at Two Rivers Youth Complex.
The bats came alive to back starting pitcher Riley Wertz in the first game, with Alex Vick unloading a three-run homer in the first before Priscilla Mora launched a pair of homers and drove in five runs to open the floodgates.
An RBI single by Lexy Melo in the fourth helped the Falcons put a bow on the run-rule win.
Jayden Estabrook had two hits and an RBI groundout, while Elena Montoya and Izzy Jones each crossed the plate two times.
That was more than enough run support for Wertz, who struck out seven and walked five in five shutout innings.
The Falcons then had to pull out the nightcap win in dramatic fashion behind a pair of newcomers following a homerun by Doane's Addison Parsons that tied the score in the sixth.
The stage was then set for Cadence Magana, who delivered a game-winning RBI single that plated Keara Cunningham in the eighth inning to cap a 4-of-4 effort at the plate.
Friends had taken an early 2-0 lead when Tamara Lozoya doubled in Magana in the second and then scored on a single by Elena Montoya.
Montoya was 3-of-3 in the second game win for the Falcons and Lozoya went 2-of-3.
That backed a solid start by Jenna Ormiston, who went all eight innings with two runs allowed and five strikeouts to claim her first career victory.
The Falcons will now turnaround and host MidAmerica Nazarene University tomorrow afternoon (Feb. 24) at 2 pm.
