Springfield, Mo. – The Friends University Falcons wrapped up the Evangel Quad with a 3-1 setback to the William Woods University Owls today (Sept. 7) at Evangel University in Springfield, Mo.
After the Owls came away with a 25-22 win in the first set, Friends battled back when a kill by setter Quinn Curran ignited a run of six straight points to conclude the second set 25-23 in the Falcons' favor to square the match 1-1.
But the script was flipped in the third set, as two kills by Pamelo Durazo sparked a 5-0 spurt to give the Owls an identical 25-23 win.
William Woods then used a 6-0 run to turn a two-point deficit of 13-11 into a 17-13 lead on the way to a 25-19 win in the fourth set to close out the match.
The Falcons (6-4) got career-high kills from Gabriella Lujan (18) and Curran (11), who additionally delivered 39 assists and 11 digs, while Antonia Perier (26), Tammy Melendez (16) and Rayne Bossier (12) also reached double-figure dig totals.
Durazo led the Owls with 13 kills and Vitoria Campos Mello contributed 12 kills. Erin Treis had a team-high 21 assists and Madelyn Ashton produced a team-leading 22 digs for William Woods.
Friends will now play three matches at the UHSP Tournament, starting with a matchup against the tourney host University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy next Friday (Sept. 13) in St. Louis, Mo.
