Volleyball Falcons drop KCAC opener at Evangel, then fall in five tough sets to (RV) College of Saint Mary

Springfield, Mo. – The Friends University Falcons fell in a pair of matches today (Sept. 6) at the Evangel Quad that snapped their five game winning streak, first to Evangel University 3-0 and then to the College of Saint Mary (Neb.) in five close sets in Springfield, Mo.

The Falcons lost by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-19 to Evangel, with Sydney Lentz (11 kills), Quinn Curran (26 assists) along with Saidy Gonzalez (10 digs) and Jenae Dearing (10 digs) serving as the top contributors.

Against College of Saint Mary, the Falcons led 2-1 following a 27-25 win in the third.  But the Flames stayed alive with a 25-21 win in the fourth before squeaking out the fifth set 16-14 to come away with the win.

Lentz again led the Falcons (6-3) with 19 kills, followed by a career-high 15 kills from Gabriella Lujan. Curran also delivered a career-best 50 assists, with Antonia Perier recording a match-high 32 digs and Dearing besting her career mark with 13 digs.

"Tough night for us," said Friends volleyball head coach Martin Ayin. "We learned about ourselves in two losses tonight but had a solid turnaround after our loss to Evangel. We came back in the second match against a physical CSM team but need to continue to get better at capitalizing on opportunities. Looking forward to watching the team push for a win tomorrow against William Woods."

The Falcons' matchup against William Woods tomorrow (Sept. 7) is set for 9:30 am.
