Softball Falcons fall in NAIA Opening Round game to Baker

Chickasha, Okla. – Kira Baker pitched the Baker University Wildcats to a 3-0 win over the Friends University Falcons in the first game of the NAIA Opening Round in the Chickasha Bracket in Chickasha, Okla, presented by Roaster's Market.

The Falcons threatened early, with Carolyn Dallimore doubling with one out followed by a walk to Vanessa Sigala.  But Baker struck out the next two hitters to escape the jam.

In the bottom of the second, Savannah Bray doubled to lead off the inning and scored the game's first run on a wild pitch.

Riley Wertz kept the deficit at one run until another leadoff double by the Wildcats, this time by Rilee Bell along with two throwing errors resulted in two more runs and a 3-0 lead for Baker.

The Falcons didn't go away quietly and proceeded to load the bases to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the sixth, but once again Baker got out of it with no harm done by getting a foul out to first and a strikeout to end the inning.

Wertz finished with four strikeouts and one earned run allowed over six frames. Dallimore had two of the Falcons three hits on the day.

Baker struck out 11, walked three and gave up just three hits in her seven scoreless innings for the Wildcats, who advance to play top-seeded and sixth-ranked USAO tomorrow at 3 pm.

The Falcons will now face an elimination game tomorrow evening (May 14) at 6 pm vs. third-seeded LSU-Alexandria, who fell 2-0 to second-seeded Midland University earlier tonight.
