Softball Falcons win second game 6-1 over Pioneers to gain split

WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons took down the MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers 6-1 in the second tilt to come away with a split today (Feb. 23) at Two Rivers Youth Complex.

Makenna Mitchell helped the Falcons (5-5) get the nightcap started on the right track with an RBI single in the first and Priscilla Mora scored a run in the second on an error when Vanessa Sigala stole second to make it 2-0.

After Abby Schulte homered in the fourth to put the Pioneers (5-3) on the board, Riley Wertz answered with an RBI single in the fifth and Becca Dunn followed that with a two-run blast to stretch the Falcon lead to 5-1.

Sigala then scored on an RBI groundout by Jayden Estabrook in the sixth.

That was more than enough run support for Kierstan Weitze, who went the distance with just one run allowed and five strikeouts.

The Falcons dropped the opening tilt 9-2 as a solo homer by Kelly Stoakes and a three-run homer from Alli VanLanker keyed a seven-run fourth inning after the first three frames were scoreless.

RBI singles by Mora and Carolyn Dallimore helped the Falcons avoid the shutout, but Mykala Johnico limited the Falcons from there with nine strikeouts in seven innings.

Dallimore and Mora each had two hits in the second game for the Falcons.  Wertz tossed three innings in relief of starter Laila Spracklen and gave up two unearned runs and struck out one. Spracklen had four strikeouts and allowed five earned runs in four innings in the circle.

Tomorrow (Feb. 24), the Falcons are right back at it vs. Hastings College starting at noon.
