WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons rallied from seven runs down in the opening game to win 13-8 and then cruised to an 11-2 victory over the Hastings College Broncos in the second game to sweep the doubleheader and improve to 7-5 on the season today (Feb. 24) at Two Rivers Youth Complex.
The Broncos scored seven runs in the first inning of the opening tilt, capped by a two-run single from Isabel Tanabe.
Down 8-2, the Falcons plated 11 unanswered runs, starting with a 10 spot in the fourth inning. The big frame was powered by a two-run double from Riley Wertz, a two-run single by Laila Spracklen and then a two-run triple by Fallyn Marshall.
Spracklen then doubled home Marshall in the fifth to finish out the scoring for the Falcons.
Marshall and Carolyn Dallimore produced three hits, three runs and two RBIs apiece to anchor the Falcon offensive attack. Spracklen went 2-of-3 with three RBIs, with Mora and Wertz each delivering a pair of hits for the Falcons. Alana Moreno scored two runs in the first game win.
Spracklen also came in and pitched six scoreless innings to help the Falcons rally for the victory.
Elana Gerhard went 3-of-3 for Hastings in the opening game.
The nightcap saw the Falcons return the favor and jump all over the Broncos with an eight-run first inning that featured a three-run double by Marshall.
Wertz finished the inning with an RBI single and then hit a two-run homer in the third to put a punctuation point on the win.
A solo home run by Lauren Schneider in the fifth put the Broncos on the board.
Marshall and Wertz each had three hits as the Falcons pounded out 14 hits as a team in the second game. Becca Dunn went 2-of-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Moreno was also 2-of-3 with two RBIs and Vanessa Sigala scored a pair of runs.
A dual threat, Wertz got the win by pitching all five innings of the run rule victory with six strikeouts and two runs allowed.
