WICHITA, Kan. -- The Friends University Falcons secured a decisive victory over the Hastings College Broncos with a final score of 88-56 on New Year's Eve this afternoon inside the Garvey Center.
Trailing 8-7 early, the Falcons gained their first separation with a 9-2 run to take a 16-10 lead at the 12:53 mark of the first half.
After a three by
Cahlese Lee pushed the Falcon lead to 21-13, the Broncos fought back and took a two-point lead when four straight points from Myles Simon finished a 14-3 burst and made it 27-24 with 4:49 left until halftime.
But the last push of the opening half belonged to the Falcons, as two buckets by
Kee'on Hutton and a pair of threes from
Randy Woolf, Jr. keyed a 10-0 stretch and put Friends up by seven.
Josh Price then drove in for a bucket as the first half half expired to give the Falcons a 45-36 lead at the break.
The Broncos cut into the lead with the first five points of the second half, only to have the Falcons take control from there.
A crucial stretch in the game came when
Collin Maclin cashed in two threes for a six-point possession that pushed the lead from seven points up to 57-44 at the 15:40 mark.
Two more threes by Maclin put an exclamation point on a decisive 22-3 run to give the Falcons a commanding 67-44 lead.
The Falcons continued to expand the lead from there and led by as much as 36 on a three by
Owen Evans that made it 88-52 with 1:17 remaining.
A key part of the Falcons' second half dominance was capitalizing on turnovers, converting Hastings' 11 turnovers into 18 points.
Maclin led the Falcons with an impressive performance, scoring 14 points while making all four of his 3-point attempts. Woolf, Jr. contributed significantly with 13 points, three of which were from beyond the arc, and distributed six assists. Hutton also stood out by scoring 10 points and securing three steals, contributing to both the offensive and defensive efforts.
KJ Spiller added 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, while
Ring Deng was notable for his defensive effort, recording two steals and adding six points.
Christian Pujals led the Broncos in scoring with ten points, connecting on four of six buckets, including two from beyond the arc.
The Falcons dominated the boards, outrebounding the Broncos 45-20 that included a whopping 16-2 edge on the offensive glass.
