Jackson eclipses 1,000 career point mark in Women’s Basketball Falcons’ 70-43 rout of Kansas Wesleyan

WICHITA, Kan. – Friends University forward Taylor Jackson became a member of the 1,000 career point club in the Falcons' 70-43 victory over the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes in a KCAC matchup tonight (Jan. 27) inside the Garvey Center.

The win is the Falcons' seventh straight overall and maintains their third-place spot in the KCAC with a 12-2 conference record and a 15-5 overall mark.

Jackson reached the 1,000 career point milestone by hitting the front end of two free throw attempts as part of an 11-0 burst over the final 4:38 of the first quarter to give the Falcons a double-digit lead of 18-8.

A native of Houston, Texas, Jackson played a big part in the run that gave the Falcons command with eight first quarter points.

After the Coyotes cut the lead in half to five points, a three-point play from Jackson sparked an 11-0 spurt and expanded the Falcon lead up to 16 at 31-15 with 4:11 left in the first half.

KWU scored the last four points of the opening half and the first two after halftime to claw back within 10, only to have Rayland Garner score the first four points of a 9-0 spurt and balloon the Falcon lead up to 19 points.

The Falcons continued to pull away and jumped ahead by 20 points at 44-24 on a putback by Jackson at the 4:40 mark of the third period.

The Coyotes had one more push in them as three-point plays by Angel Lee and Hampton Williams keyed an 8-0 spurt and made it 44-32.

But Friends had a strong response, this time on the strength of two threes by Trinity Johnson that helped push the lead back to 52-35 heading to the fourth quarter.

The aforementioned fourth quarter belonged entirely to the Falcons, as a score by Jadyn Glasgow finished a 24-5 run that bridged the final 2:38 of the third quarter and the opening 6:32 of the fourth period.

Overall, the Falcons outscored the Coyotes 18-8 and limited KWU to just two makes in 20 attempts in the final quarter to emphatically close out the victory.

"We played a solid defensive game tonight and had good spurts at the offensive end as well," said Friends women's basketball head coach Dean Jaderston. "Congrats to Taylor on scoring her 1000th point tonight in a great all-around performance. (17 points, eight boards, and five blocks).  Every game we get a little better at something, and it's fun to see the improvement. We just have to learn to value the ball a little better. If we can cut down our turnovers we'll become even more dangerous."

Also the school's modern-era career blocks leader, Jackson added to that total tonight with five blocks to give her 259 swats for her career. Jackson's terrific all-around stat line included game-high totals of 17 points and eight rebounds.

Lauryn McIver also continued her run of solid play of 16 points and four assists, with Johnson finishing with 10 points for the Falcons.

Jill Stephens led the Coyotes (10-10, 8-6 KCAC) with 12 points and six boards.

Friends held a 44-42 edge in rebounds, but dominated the interior to the tune of outscoring the Coyotes 36-12 in the paint.

The sizzling Falcons will next play at McPherson College Wednesday evening (Jan. 31) at 6 pm in McPherson, Kan.
