Women’s Basketball Falcons easily dispatch of McPherson College for eighth straight win

McPherson, Kan. – The Friends University extended their longest winning streak in seven years with an 85-58 rout of the McPherson College Bulldogs tonight (Jan. 31) in KCAC action in McPherson, Kan.

The Falcons are now 16-5 overall and remain a game out of first place in the KCAC with a 13-2 league record.

Six points from Rayland Garner and five by Lauryn McIver keyed a 15-4 start and immediately put the Falcons in control.

It was a 10-point lead of 25-15 for Friends going to the second quarter and quickly ballooned up to 16 on consecutive threes by Trinity Johnson.

The Falcons led 41-27 at the break and broke things wide open early in the third behind another three by Johnson, a three-point play by Garner and then a three-pointer by Kori Babock for a commanding 50-27 cushion.

Leading by 22, three layups by Garner sparked a 12-5 spurt and gave the Falcons what proved to be their biggest lead of the game, 65-36 with 3:10 left in the third.

The Falcons coasted to the victory from that point, never letting the lead dip below 21 points the rest of the way.

"It was a solid win, especially from the offensive end," said Friends women's basketball head coach Dean Jaderston. "We got off to a quick start, took care of the ball, and responded to every run they tried to make."

Garner powered the Falcons with 24 points, while McIver had 12 points and finished just one assist shy of her career-high and a modern-era record with 10 helpers. Johnson finished with 15 points and hit 5-of-8 from three-point distance, with Kassie Kinniburgh recording a game-high eight rebounds.

Madelyn Hankins paced the Bulldogs with 16 points and Joze' Baker scored 14. Matisyn Moses added 11 points for McPherson (6-15, 2-13 KCAC).

Friends had a 46-38 edge in rebounding overall and stymied the Bulldogs in shooting just 27 percent (17-of-63) from the field, including only a 20.8 percent clip (5-of-24) from beyond the arc.

The Falcons will next host Bethany College Saturday evening (Feb. 3) at 5 pm inside the Garvey Center.
