WICHITA, Kan. -- The Friends University Falcons found a way to win two games over the Sterling College Lady Warriors in KCAC action today (Apr. 1) at Two Rivers Youth Complex. The Falcons nipped the Lady Warriors 1-0 in the opening tilt and then used a big sixth frame to take the second game 8-4.
With the first game locked in a scoreless gridlock through five innings, the Falcons finally broke through when
Ezra Arredondo singled to left field to lead off the inning and scored the games only run on an RBI double by
Izzy Jones.
Jenna Ormiston was outstanding in the circle for the Falcons, pitching a complete game shutout and allowing just one hit with four strikeouts over seven innings.
Arredondo and Jones each had two hits, with Jones also stealing two bases.
Macaela Ambriz was also solid for the Lady Warriors, pitching six innings and recording eight strikeouts.
Zoie Redgate was the story in the nightcap with five RBIs in the Falcons' four run victory, highlighted by her first career homer, a three-run blast that capped a decisive six-run fourth inning that turned a two-run deficit into a four-run cushion. She then singled home two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to answer Sterling's two runs in the top of the frame and once again create a four-run edge.
The Lady Warriors had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game behind an RBI double by Ashley Johnson in the second inning and a solo homer from Olivia Wright in the fourth.
Friends' sixth-inning breakthrough was started by a sacrifice fly by
Cambell Riordan and a two-run single from
Keara Cunningham ahead of Redgate's big swing.
Redgate went 3-of-4 for the Falcons (17-16, 7-7 KCAC) in game two and Cunningham had two hits.
Arredondo started and lasted 3.2 innings with two runs allowed before giving way to
Ainsley McGill, who pitched the final 3.1 innings and gave up one earned run to earn the win.
Sterling (10-24, 5-9 KCAC) got two hits apiece from Wright, Mariah Cunningham and Kylie Dunbar.
The Falcons will next celebrate Senior Day on Saturday (Apr. 4) at 1 pm vs. the University of Saint Mary.
