KANSAS – On a week that saw the program clinch its first KCAC regular season championship since 2006, the Friends University Falcons have fittingly swept this week's conference awards, with freshman forward Diego Marin winning KCAC Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore midfielder Finn Kelly receiving Defensive Player of the Week honors. Announced today (Nov. 2) by the conference office, all KCAC Player of the Week awards are sponsored by Athletic Solutions.
Both of Marin's goals this past week were clutch, with the first building a 2-0 lead over No. 10-ranked Ottawa University that clinched the conference title and the second resulting in the game-winning goal over McPherson with just 39 second remaining to give the Falcons a 3-2 victory in the regular season finale.
A San Jose, Costa Rica native, Marin leads the Falcons and is tied for fourth in the KCAC with 13 goals on the season and has dished out five assists that is tied for second on the team. He is also tops on the Falcons and tied for fifth in the league with four game-winning scores.
Kelly was the anchor behind a defensive unit that pitched a 2-0 shutout over Ottawa while also helping the Falcons stave off the McPherson College Bulldogs on a damp Saturday (Oct. 31) for a 3-2 Senior Day victory.
A native of Glasgow, Scotland, Kelly and the Falcons are second in the KCAC with 10 shutouts on the season.
The Falcons, the top seed in the KCAC Postseason Tournament, are set to host the eighth-seeded Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes tomorrow night (Nov. 3) at 7 pm at Adair-Austin Stadium.
