KANSAS – Friends University sophomore quarterback Walker Overman has been voted as the KCAC Football Offensive Player of the Week, while junior defensive back Zamarion Manuel is the league's Defensive Player of the Week, announced today (Oct. 6) by the conference office. All KCAC Player of the Week awards are sponsored by Athletic Solutions.
Also named the NAIA Offensive Player of the Week yesterday, Overman produced the best game of his career when the No 8-ranked Falcons needed it most in a 66-42 offensive shootout victory over the Ottawa University Braves on Saturday (Oct. 3).
Overman accounted for five touchdowns, three through the air and two on the ground while recording career-high totals in both rushing (167 yards) and passing (163 yards). A native of Gunter, Texas, Overman now leads the NAIA's No 1-ranked rushing unit with 410 yards and has thrown for 364 yards on the season.
With the game against the Braves in the midst of a combined 10 straight scoring drives, Manuel not only put a halt to it with an interception but returned it 50 yards to the end zone for a critical touchdown that made the score 59-42 and effectively put the game away in the fourth quarter. Manuel also contributed six tackles and three pass breakups in the win.
The Springdale, Ark. native now has 16 tackles on the season and is tied for the team lead in both interceptions (two) and pass breakups (four).
The 6-0 Falcons will now have a bye week before a showdown at No. 15-ranked McPherson College looms in the KCAC Bissell Division opener on Oct. 17 in McPherson, Kan.
