Softball Falcons Battle in Intense Doubleheader Split at Avila

Kansas City, Mo. - In a tight, low scoring opener, Friends fell 3–1 to Avila despite a strong pitching performance from Riley Wertz, who struck out 10 over 6 innings and allowed just three runs on four hits. The Falcons managed only four hits at the plate, with their lone run coming off an RBI triple from Tamara Lozoya in the fourth inning. Alex Vick also doubled, and Elena Montoya recorded two of the team's four total hits. Avila held on for the win behind Avila's McKayla Cotton complete game effort.

The Falcons bounced back in Game 2 with a gritty 4–3 victory, sealing the win with a late game push and strong defensive plays. Cadence Magana and Jayden Estabrook each drove in two runs, and Raelen Hernandez laid down a key sac bunt to move runners and set up the go-ahead score. Kierstan Weitze got the start and allowed two runs over four innings before Riley Wertz returned in relief to pitch the final three innings and earn the win. Avila staged a rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring twice, but the Falcons held firm making timely outs to secure the split.

Friends moves to 33–11 overall, 21–5 KCAC, and now take first place in the conference. The Falcons will now move into post season and the KCAC Softball Tournament will be held in Branson Missouri, April 29 - May 1.
