WICHITA, Kan. — The No. 18 Friends University Falcons opened KCAC play with an 88–79 victory over the Evangel University Valor Saturday afternoon (Nov. 15) inside the Garvey Center. The Falcons knocked down 12-of-32 attempts from beyond the arc (37.5%), and distributed the ball well finishing the game with 20 assists. Despite Evangel's effort to close the gap in the second half the Falcons held firm to secure their first conference victory of the season.
The Falcons built a 42-31 halftime lead limiting Evangel to only 10% (1-10 3PT) from the 3PT line, and 38% from the field (10-26 FG).
Collin Maclin set the tone early with 13 points and eight rebounds in the opening half. The Falcons extended their advantage to as many as 23 points with under 10 minutes to go in the game, but the Valor responded with a late surge to trim the deficit to seven. Friends, however, made timely plays down the stretch to close out the win.
The Falcons showcased a balanced offensive attack with five players in double figures.
Cahlese Lee exploded in the second half, scoring 20 points after the break, including three three-pointers, and 7-of-8 free throws. Maclin secured a double-double with 17 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while also dishing out five assists.
Ringo Deng delivered a strong all-around performance with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists, and a block.
Al Emerllahu also had an efficient performance finishing with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting (2-of-3 from three) and seven rebounds.
Owen Evans made an impact off the bench, contributing 11 points, with three three-pointers, three assists and collecting two steals.
With the victory, Friends moves to 1-0 in KCAC play, and 4-1 overall. The Falcons will be back in the Garvey Center next Wednesday (Nov. 19) for a top-25 matchup against the No. 13-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles. Tip off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
