Wichita, Kansas—The Falcons faced a tough challenge in their KCAC home opener last night (Sept. 28), falling to Bethel College in straight sets, 3-0. Despite several promising runs throughout the match that brought the scores closer, the Falcons could not find the momentum needed to turn the tide in their favor.
Bethel College's strong front line consistently pressured the Falcons, making it difficult for them to establish any rhythm. Each time the Falcons tried to mount a comeback, Bethel responded with solid defensive plays and well-placed attacks, keeping the home team on their heels.
Sofia Mekelburg made her presence felt in each set after returning from injury, notching 13 kills on the night despite some tough Bethel blockers. Narrowly following, Lujan with 9 kills.
Antonia Perier contributed significantly on defense, registering 23 digs—her sixth game of the season with over 20 digs.
Quinn Curran also did some damage, recording 26 assists.
"We put together some great runs and solid moments today, but came up short against a seasoned Bethel team," Friends volleyball head coach Martin Ayin said. "We will get after it this week as we prepare for USM. Thank you to all the family, friends and fans that came out today and supported us."
The Falcons play at home for homecoming week this Wednesday (Oct. 2) at 7 p.m. in Garvey Center against the University of Saint Mary.
