No. 21 Football Falcons thump Eagles 56-10 to move to 3-0

KANSAS CITY, Mo.K'Vonte Baker rushed for a career-high 214 yards to power the Friends University Falcons to a 56-10 victory at the Avila University Eagles today (Sept. 14) in Kansas City, Mo.

The Falcons have now outscored the opposition by a whopping 146-23 in improving to 3-0 on the season.

Special teams contributed to the first points of the day when a high snap on an Avila punt drifted to the back of the end zone on the game's first possession for a safety to immediately put Friends on top.

It stayed 2-0 until Kerrion Hadnot capped a 12 play, 47-yard drive with a four-yard score with 23 seconds left in the first quarter.

From there, the rout was on as Baker scampered for 28 yards and found Austin Pratt for a 46-yard reception before scoring from eight yards out to make it 15-0.

Following a 45-yard field goal by Juan Delgado-Me that put the Eagles on the board, Elias Pino broke free for a 77-yard touchdown to give the Falcons a commanding 22-3 lead at the half.

To start the third quarter, it was Baker's turn to electrify with a 75-yard gallop to the end zone to push the lead up to 29-3 just 56 seconds into the second half.

Pino then added his second score of the day with an 18-yard touchdown run with 2:44 left in the third.

Early in the fourth, the Falcons continued to pour it on with a 30-yard rushing score from Michael Lopez, his first career touchdown and then a two-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Makhi Byrd on the Eagles' ensuing possession.

Leading 49-10 after a 73-yard touchdown pass from Nick Sanford II to Jordan Cummings, Jud Cheatham rushed for 29 yards to set up a one-yard plunge by Treylan Gross with 3:40 left to put a bow on the victory.

Today's win saw the Falcons accumulate 663 yards of total offense and 594 rushing yards, both second in the modern era to last season's regular season finale performance against Bethany (672 total yards, 612 rushing yards).

"We had a great day as a program," said Friends football head coach Terry Harrison. "Our guys have been awesome every day at practice and their commitment to doing things the right way is paying off on Saturdays. Still a lot of room for improvement but always proud of our guys for competing in a way that we can all be proud of."

In addition to his career-best rushing total, Baker also threw for 69 yards. Pino, the Falcons' leading rusher overall this season, continued his solid start with 121 more yards on the ground. Cheatham also rushed five times for a career-high 94 yards for the Falcons.

Quentin Curtis led the Eagles with 49 rushing yards and Cummings had 93 receiving yards.

Lazarus Range and Cooper Skrobecki each contributed a team-leading four tackles, with Barrett Roads and Marco Torres each recording a sack for Friends.

Malik Ashford led the Eagles (1-2) with seven tackles.

The Falcons will next return home to Adair-Austin Stadium and host Kansas Wesleyan University next Saturday evening (Sept. 21) for a 6 pm kickoff.
