Volleyball Falcons reach best six-game start in 15 years with 3-0 romp of USAO

WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons recorded their fourth straight sweep with a 3-0 victory over the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers tonight (Aug. 28) in front of a boisterous crowd inside the Garvey Center.  The win gives the Falcons five wins in their first six games for the first time since the 2009 season.

With the first set even at 3-3, the Falcons surged behind three kills from Sofia Mekelburg and a pair of kills by Sydney Lentz for a 12-4 lead.

The Falcons finished the set 25-12 to convincingly take the lead in the match.

USAO was more competitive in the second set and led 11-10, but a kill from Gabriella Lujan ignited the Falcons and a service ace from Antonia Perier put Friends ahead 17-13.

Leading 21-17, the Falcons closed out the set with four of the last five points to take a commanding 2-0 lead overall.

Lentz and Mekelburg then made sure it was a quick night for the Falcons with three kills apiece to fuel a 15-1 spurt that turned a 4-3 deficit into an 18-5 cushion in the third set.  Friends put away the match 25-11 in the final frame.

"I'm so proud of our team tonight, these young women have been putting in the work and it's awesome to see them fire up our home crowd with a dominating win," said Friends volleyball head coach Martin Ayin. "Thank you to all the family, friends and super fans for a great night of Falcon Volleyball!"

Lentz delivered a match-high 11 kills and hit a sizzling .476 for the Falcons and Quinn Curran recorded 24 assists along with 11 digs. Perier led the Falcons with 16 digs on the night.

Mallory Miller had eight assists for USAO (3-2).

The Falcons will conclude their three-game homestand this week Friday night (Aug. 30) vs. Baker University.
