Great Bend, Kan. – The Friends University Baseball Falcons weren't quite ready for their 2024 season to end and defeated the Avila University Eagles 2-1 behind a phenomenal start from Brett Black today (May 3) at the Great Bend Sports Complex in Great Bend, Kan.
Niquan Benjamin picked a fine time to launch his first home run of the season in the second inning to give the Falcons an early lead.
Melwin Perez then singled home DJ Killion in the sixth to put the Falcons (29-22) up by two runs.
After a solo home run by Zach Dillman put the Eagles on the board and cut the Falcon lead in half in the seventh, Black stranded the tying run on base and Nolan Crumrine then blanked Avila over the final two frames to pick up his first save of the season and second of his career.
Black surrendered just one run and struck out three with one walk over his brilliant seven innings of work.
Killion and Zeke Henson each had two hits to fuel the Falcon offense.
The Eagles (22-30) also got a pair of hits from Dillman and Gio Armas.
Avila starter Alex Walton lasted 5.2 innings and allowed one earned run with three strikeouts and one walk.
The Falcons will now await the loser of the next game between second seeded Tabor College and third seeded Oklahoma Wesleyan University for another elimination game tomorrow morning (May 4) at 9 am.
