WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons powered past the (RV) University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers 11-7 in non-conference action today (Mar. 5) at West Side Athletic Field.
After being held hitless through the first three frames, the Falcons broke through in a big way as Zeke Henson hit a two-run homer and Sam Engberg singled home two runs to put the Falcons up 4-1.
Spencer Davidson then launched a three-run homer in the fifth to push the Falcon lead to three runs.
The Drovers twice tried to mount a rally, but each time the Falcons had a response.
Ben Bach hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to cut the Falcon lead in half, only to have the Falcons plate two runs in the bottom of the inning.
USAO again used the long ball to make things interesting when Peyton McDowall went deep for a two-run homer to help the Drovers score three runs in the eighth. But with the tying run at the plate, Preston Lewis got a groundout to escape the threat and keep the Falcons up by two runs.
An RBI single by Carlos Rodriguez and a sacrifice fly from Niquan Benjamin then provided the Falcons (14-7) with two crucial insurance runs in the eighth.
Lewis then got a double play in the ninth to finish out the victory for the Falcons and earn the save.
Davidson and Nijai Armbrister each had two hits at the plate to lead the Falcon offensive attack.
The Drovers (11-8) also got two hits apiece from Gabriel Arroyo and Christopher Martinez.
Matthew Benton started for the Falcons and went three innings with one run allowed, followed by Nolan Crumrine, who also pitched three frames and gave up three runs with a pair of strikeouts to earn the win as the pitcher of record. The Falcons got an additional scoreless inning from Austin Neely.
