Women's Basketball Falcons give (RV) Bluejays first KCAC loss with spirited fourth quarter defensive effort

Hillsboro, Kan. --  The Friends University Falcons handed the (RV) Tabor College Bluejays their first KCAC loss of the season in a 62-50 victory on the road this evening (Dec. 11) in Hillsboro, Kan. The victory runs the Falcons' record to 6-5 overall and into a tie fourth in the conference at 4-2.

In the first quarter,  Lauryn McIver scored six points towards the end of the period to help the Falcons grab a 20-14 lead over Tabor.

After Tabor scored six straight to open the second period and tie the score, Friends regained momentum with Taylor Jackson scoring back-to-back jumpers, pushing the score to 26-22 with 2:53 left in the quarter. Despite Tabor's efforts, including a 3-pointer from Ivy Preusser in the closing minutes, Friends maintained their edge, ending the half with a 35-31 advantage.

In the third quarter, Friends sustained momentum with a strong start, including jumpers by Jadyn Glasgow and Abigail Barr before consecutive scores by Taylor Jackson pushed the edge to double-digits at 47-37. The Falcons carried a 49-42 lead into the final period.

The Bluejays cut the lead to one possession on a jumper from Lillie Veer, but the Falcon defense dug in from that point, forcing 16 straight misses from the field for Tabor during the final 8:19.  Buckets from Sadie Hopman, McIver and Jackson provided the Falcons plenty of offense down the stretch to pull out the massive road victory.

"We needed that one!" Friends women's basketball head coach Dean Jaderston said. "I felt it was our first game to put four quarters together at both ends of the floor. Coming off two losses where we led in the fourth quarter but didn't finish well, it was important for us to stay aggressive to the very end. This will us some good momentum to build on as we go into break."

McIver and Jackson each scored 14 points to lead Friends, with Jackson producing a double-double with 11 rebounds along with a pair of blocks after being forced to miss last Saturday's game vs. Kansas Wesleyan University with an injury.  Hopman made a significant impact on defense with three steals and Barr provided a strong performance with eight boards. Kyla Frenchers also led the Falcons with three assists.

Veer led the Bluejays (7-3, 5-1 KCAC) in scoring with ten points and also had a team-high six rebounds. Kloe Bowin scored 11points, while Adrian Hazelwood had four assists.

Friends held a double-figure edge of 39-29 overall on the glass and outshot Tabor 43.1 percent to 31.4 percent.
