Bartlesville, Okla. -- Thanks to outstanding late game execution, the Friends University Falcons managed to escape with an 82-81 double-overtime victory tonight (Nov. 20) over the Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles to improve to 2-0 in the KCAC and 4-3 overall on the season.
The Falcons had to rally twice, starting at the end of regulation when
Jadyn Glasgow knocked down arguably the biggest of her career, a three-pointer with four seconds left to tie the score at 59-59 and force the first extra period.
Down four in the first overtime,
Kori Babcock hit a huge three to make it a one-point game at the 3:27 mark.
With the Eagles ahead by one following a pair of lead changes, a layup by
Taylor Jackson followed by one free throw by
Abigail Barr squared the game again at 69-69 and sent the game into a second overtime session.
The second extra period was also back-and-forth, with Barr hitting a jump shot to give the Falcons a one-point edge of 80-79 with 44 seconds left.
After OKWU jumped back in front on a layup by Zariah Tillman,
Lauryn McIver then came through with arguably the biggest shot of her career as well with a game-winning putback with 2.7 seconds left to give the Falcons the victory.
"Sometimes you have to gut out a win on the road," said Friends women's basketball head coach
Dean Jaderston. "We got a huge lift from
Jadyn Glasgow and our defense kept us in the game. We figured out a way to get one last putback to get the win!"
In the first quarter, Friends took an early lead against the Eagles, with
Taylor Jackson scoring the opening layup at 9:00. The visiting team maintained consistent scoring, highlighted by Barr contributing with both a free throw and a layup, helping extend their lead to 7-2. The Eagles managed to keep the game close, with Shade Richardson and Sophia Regalado scoring crucial points, bringing the score to 9-8. However, Friends ended the quarter with a slight edge, with Jackson and
Kyla Frenchers each adding layups, securing a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Eagles outscored Friends 11-2. The Falcons struggled offensively, making only 1 of 13 shot attempts and committing five turnovers. The Eagles capitalized on these turnovers with five steals and scored eight points off turnovers. A key sequence for the home team included a 7-0 run starting with Tillman's layup at at the 5:54 mark, which helped them take their largest lead of the quarter at five points.
The third quarter between the Falcons and the Eagles was closely contested, with Friends slightly outscoring the home team 15-14. Friends began the quarter with a basket from Babcock at 9:00, closing the gap to 22-19. The Eagles' Tillman made key free throws at 4:12, extending their lead to 27-23. Friends responded with a late push, including a layup by McIver with one minute left, reducing the deficit to 34-32. The quarter ended with Shade Richardson's fast break layup, giving the Eagles a 36-32 lead heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Friends and the Eagles engaged in a closely contested battle. The Falcons began with a notable scoring streak as
Kori Babcock contributed significantly with a layup and two 3-pointers, helping Friends take a brief lead. The Eagles countered effectively, with Tatiana Gilford and Shade Richardson leading the scoring efforts, including a crucial 3-pointer by Richardson that extended their lead to 52-47.
Down 57-53, Glasgow also hit a big three to make it a one-point game before her clutch trey to tie it.
Barr led the Falcons with 18 points and 10 rebounds, demonstrating strong performance in both scoring and rebounding. McIver contributed 12 points and seven rebounds while also adding two blocks to her defensive efforts. Glasgow finished with 15 points, making 5 out of 7 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers. Babcock was effective from beyond the arc, hitting three 3-pointers for 15 points, and she also led the team with six assists. Jackson made an impact on the boards with 14 rebounds and added 13 points, contributing significantly on both ends of the floor.
The Eagles (1-5, 0-2 KCAC) were led by Shade Richardson with 23 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Rashaan Smith was a dominant presence on the boards, grabbing 11 rebounds, and contributed 13 points while also adding three blocks. Tillman totaled 13 points and led the team with three steals. Haley Meely had a team-high nine assists, along with four steals, while contributing eight points. Tatiana Gilford provided a strong offensive effort with 11 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field for OKWU.
The Falcons will next host York University Saturday evening (Nov. 23) for their KCAC home opener starting at 5 pm inside the Garvey Center.
