Nevada, Mo. – Claudia Hadlock made one free throw with two seconds remaining and that was enough to give the Cottey College Comets a 61-60 win over the Friends University Falcons this evening (Oct. 31) in Nevada, Mo.
The Falcons trailed by three until newcomer KK Peeler hit a game-tying three with 24 seconds left.
Friends got a stop on the ensuing possession but was whistled for a technical foul for what appeared to be calling a timeout when they had none remaining. That led to Hadlock missing the first free throw but making the second to seal the win for Cottey.
The Falcons led early 15-14 when threes by Kori Babcock and Lauryn McIver stretched the edge to seven points early in the second quarter.
It was a six-point Falcon lead when the Comets scored the last seven points of the second half to lead 28-27 at the break.
The third quarter was tight throughout, with two free throws by Kyla Frenchers giving the Falcons a 45-43 lead heading to the final period.
Taylor Jackson led the Falcons (1-1) with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds, with McIver adding 12 points. Peeler finished with 11 points and was a defensive menace with six steals. Babcock chipped in with 10 points for Friends.
Sarah Hunt paced the Comets with 15 points and Lesley Chalmers scored 11. Dally Coulter pulled down a team-high nine boards for Cottey (2-0).
