Lindsborg, Kan. – The Bethany College Swedes methodically pulled away for an 84-71 win over the Friends University Falcons in a KCAC matchup tonight (Nov. 29) in Lindsborg, Kan.
The Falcons got off to a good start and claimed an early 9-3 lead behind six points from KJ Spiller.
Bethany answered back when a three by JD Carson capped a 15-3 burst for an 18-12 lead.
A layup from Christian Williams and three-point plauy by Spiller cut the deficit to one, but the Swedes turned back the Falcons and carried a 41-35 lead into the break.
The Swedes then opened the second half with an 8-2 push to double their halftime lead up to 49-37.
It was still a 12-point lead when seven points from Maurice Cudjo II fueled a 9-0 run that stretched the Bethany advantage up to 21 with 13:23 remaining.
Consecutive threes by Carson helped the Swedes take their biggest lead of the game of 26 points, with the Falcons battling until the end and finishing the game on a 9-1 run to trim the final margin to 13 points.
Steele Chapman led the Falcons (3-4, 1-2 KCAC) with 14 points and Spiller finished with 13. Tim Barbieri added 10 points and Al Emerllahu had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Cudjo II paced six Swedes (2-4, 1-2 KCAC) in double-figures with 17 points, while Jamal Frenchwood recorded a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards.
The rebounds were even at 33 apiece, but the Swedes outshot the Falcons by a comfortable margin, 54.1 percent (33-of-61) to 36.7 percent (22-of-60).
The Falcons will now return home and host Ottawa University Saturday evening (Dec. 2) at 7 pm inside the Garvey Center.
