Columbia, Mo. – The (RV) Columbia College Cougars pulled away in the second half for a 74-49 win over the Friends University Falcons today (Nov. 25) in non-conference action in Columbia, Mo.
The Falcons came out strong in the first quarter, getting a three from both Kori Babcock and Trinity Johnson during an 11-3 spurt for an 11-6 lead at the 5:14 mark.
Following a three by Lexi Miller, the Falcons got right back at it as a three-point play by Taylor Jackson made it 18-11 with 1:20 left in the opening period.
With the lead still at seven at 20-13 early in the second quarter, Allison Stiers scored eight straight points to key a 12-0 run overall to put Columbia in front by three.
The Cougars continued to increase the lead and took a double-digit edge of 36-26 at the break.
Another three by Babcock brought the Falcons within single-digits at 38-29, but the Cougars then broke things open behind eight points from Delaney Hortstman that sparked a 15-0 burst for a comfortable 24-point lead with 2:11 left in the third.
It was a 19-point lead for the Cougars heading to the fourth and five straight points from Stiers ignited an 8-0 run to begin the final period to effectively put it away for Columbia.
Jackson posted her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds along with three blocks. Rayland Garner also had 10 boards and recorded four steals for the Falcons (4-2, 2-0 KCAC).
Stiers shot 11-of-14 from the field, 8-of-11 from three-point distance to finish with a game-high 30 points. Hortstman had a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Mallory Shetley blocked four shots for Columbia (6-2).
The Falcons will next resume KCAC action at Bethany College next Wednesday evening (Nov. 29). Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm in Lindsborg, Kan.
