WICHITA, Kan. – It took only one game for head coach Phil McClintock to change the record book as the Friends University Falcons scored a modern-era record (since 2004) 119 points in a 119-56 romp of the Calvary University Warriors in their home opener tonight (Nov. 2) inside the Garvey Center. The 119-point total bests the previous mark by two (117 vs. Haskell, 2003).
"I'm happy for the guys on the first win of the season," said McClintock. "They played our brand of basketball playing fast, sharing the ball, and working hard on the defensive end. We still have a lot of work to do but this is a great start!"
The scoring was evenly distributed for the Falcons, with six players reaching double-figure points.
Al Emerllahu came off the bench to lead the Falcons with 17 points, with Drew Patterson scoring 14 points and hitting 4-of-7 from three-point distance. Kee'on Hutton and Collin Maclin each scored 13, while Steele Chapman had 12 points and KJ Spiller added 11.
The Falcons never trailed and got off to a hot start as a three by Patterson was followed by consecutive treys from Chapman for a quick 9-0 lead.
Threes by Emerllahu and Chapman ballooned the lead up to 22-8 before Emerllahu scored the first six points of a 15-0 burst that stretched edge up to 37-11.
After the Warriors trimmed the lead to 18 at the 7:02 mark, it was a team effort to open the floodgates again, with the Falcons using a three by Maclin, three treys from Patterson, and a traditional three-point play from both Hutton and Steve Staco to spark a 22-3 spurt for a 61-24 bulge late in the half.
It was a 61-27 lead at the break and the Falcons continued to push the edge higher in the second half, with a 65-point lead of 119-54 representing the largest of the night with 18 seconds remaining.
Tim Barbieri led the Falcons with a game-high 13 rebounds, with nine coming on the defensive end. Barbieri, Hutton and Staco each had three steals as the Falcons forced 28 turnovers overall.
Patterson and Chapman each four assists to lead the Falcons.
Friends shot well throughout, going 23-of-43 (53.5 percent) in the opening half and then 20-of-38 (52.6 percent) in the second half for a 53.1 percent shooting clip overall.
The Falcons will next be at Oklahoma City University on Saturday, Nov. 11 for a 4 pm tip-off. The following day, Friends will play a high-octane exhibition tilt at Wichita State University, set for 1 pm inside Charles Koch Arena.
